I went to a hockey game. And it was glorious.
As expected, the San Jose Sharks beat the LA Kings, 4-2, at HP Pavilion. It was a blast. Their mascot, SJ Sharkie, rode in on a 4-wheeler before player intros. The Sharks skated through a giant shark head when they took the ice. Chants of "Beat LA!" rang in my ears. Section 221 destroyed Section 114 in a dance contest.
In short, I loved it! Fave moment...listening to the National Anthem. It's been awhile since I've attended a sporting event...maybe that's why hearing the Star-Spangled Banner gives me intense pride, and chills.
The only complaint I had was that with yet another Sharks win, it'll be harder for the Red Wings to catch them in the standings. All I can hope for is the two teams to meet in the playoffs. Can you say epic?
Nothing too profound in the blog tonight, but one thing is interesting: Canada's influence on American sports. Even in a place like California, there is a Canadian flag right next to the American flag at HP Pavilion, which is awesome - hockey is Canada's sport, after all. I then consider that a Canadian, James Naismith, founded the sport of basketball. Both sports have NHL and NBA teams in Canada (sorry about the Grizzlies, Vancouver...*sniff*), as does Major League Baseball.
Although steroids, childish behavior, criminal activity, and lockouts have ravaged the image of most of the four major sports, I respect the fact that even in bad economic times, we can take time to cheer for heroes and have camaraderie with strangers. If you saw SJ Sharkie jumping across seats and stuffing his fake sharky face with popcorn, you would have believed, too.
As a former mascot myself, it was a sight to see. Brought to us in part by our awesome neighbors to the North. :)
